Arranging fresh flowers into a garland

          Known as mailai in Thai , a garland is a typical Thai flower arrangement . Various parts of a flower ,such as petals and leaves , are used to make up garlands of different patterns: circular ,flat ,and oval . Each one is fashioned in accordance with its use ,such as the kind for draping around the wrist or the neck , or the type that is to be used as a souvenir.

        A garland is an artistic creation , and the maker must put his or her heart into it , because it requires good craftsmanship and perseverance to make a beautiful arrangement . A-well made garland never fails to impress the grateful recipient . Nobody knows exactly when garland making began in Thailand . An excerpt from the book Phra Ratchphithi Sip Song Duaean (Royal Ceremonies of the Twelve Months ) , written by King Rama V, indicates that Thao Si Chulalak , Nang Nopphamat , the principal consort of King Phra Ruang of Sukhothai period , arranged flowers and carved fruits and vegetables in various forms for decoration . The book does not specifically mention , however , whether garland making was introduces at that time or not .
   Today , the use of garlands is still popular for decorating or arranging fresh flowers among Thai people . Garlands ar usuallly handed out between individuals on all kinds of occasions . They are still favored as souvenirs , both in times of happiness or even of sadness . Therefore ,garlands areand always will be a valuable feature of Thai society.
 

ร้อยกรองดอกไม้สดเป็นพวงมาลัย

         มาลัย หมายถึง ดอกไม้ประดิษฐ์แบบไทย ชนิดหนึ่ง ด้วยการนำดอกไม้ กลีบดอกไม้ ใบไม้ และส่วนต่างๆ ของดอกไม้ มาร้อยเป็นพวงให้มีหลากหลายแบบ โดยแบ่งตามหน้าที่การใช้สอย เช่น มาลัยข้อมือ มาลัยคล้องคอ มาลัยชำร่วย หรือแบ่งตามลักษณะรูปแบบ ของการร้อย เช่น มาลัยซีก มาลัยกลม มาลัยแบน มาลัยรี ฯลฯ เป็นต้น

         การร้อยมาลัยเป็นศิลปะการประดิษฐ์ ดอกไม้สดของไทย ที่ต้องอาศัยใจรักประกอบกับฝีมืออันประณีต ละเอียดอ่อน ผสมผสานกับ ความมานะพยายามอย่างยิ่งยวด มาลัยที่ได้จึงมีความสวยสดงดงามน่าประทับใจ แก่ผู้พบเห็น ตลอดทุกยุคทุกสมัย อย่างไรก็ตาม ไม่ปรากฏแน่ชัดว่ามีการเริ่มต้นร้อยมาลัยมาแต่สมัยใด แต่จากหลักฐานเก่าแก่ที่สุดเท่าที่สืบค้นปรากฏใน พระราชนิพนธ์ เรื่อง “พระราชพิธี 12 เดือน” ตอนหนึ่งที่กล่าวถึงท้าวศรีจุฬาลักษณ์ หรือ นางนพมาศ สนมเอกในพระเจ้าอรุณมหาราช หรือ พระร่วงแห่งกรุง สุโขทัย ได้คิดค้นตกแต่ง โคมลอย ให้งดงามวิจิตรกว่าโคมของ พระสนมอื่น ทั้งปวง ด้วยการนำเอาดอกไม้ ต่างๆ มาประดิษฐ์ ตกแต่ง และยังนำผลไม้มาทำการแกะสลัก แต่มิได้อ้างอิงถึงการตกแต่งครั้งนั้น ว่ามีการร้อยมาลัยประดับด้วยหรือไม่

 ปัจจุบัน คนไทยเรายังคงนิยมใช้มาลัยในการตกแต่งประดิษฐ์ดอกไม้สด เนื่องใน งานพิธีต่างๆ และร้อยมาลัย เพื่อมอบให้แก่กันระหว่างบุคคล มาลัยยังเป็นที่ชื่นชอบอย่างกว้างขวาง ไม่ว่าจะนำไปใช้ในงานแสดงความสุข หรือ งานแห่งความทุกข์ก็ตาม จึงถือได้ว่าการประดิษฐ์มาลัยมีคุณค่าต่อสังคมไทย เสมอมา
